Gifts vs. Talents: Spiritual Gifts FAQ

Question: How are spiritual gifts different from talents?

My short answer is that spiritual gifts are defined in Scripture as divine abilities/special endowments, given by God's Holy Spirit, to believers, according to God's design/choosing/grace, to glorify Himself and to build up/strengthen the Body of Christ.  Approximately 23 gifts are listed.

Seems to me that we all have talents--believers and non-believers alike, whereas believers have gifts that are unique to followers of Christ.  There are some who make the case that talents are sometimes transformed at the time of conversion into a spiritual gift.  For example, someone with a talent for teaching might, in fact, discover he/she has the spiritual gift of teaching when converted (but, not necessarily).  However, not all talents are transformed at conversion.  For example, there are many talented musicians who do not have the gift of "artistic expression"—and who are not using that talent in such a way that God is glorified and the Body is strengthened.

Another way to look at it is that talents are given to us when we are born; gifts are given through God's Spirit when we are re-born.  Natural talents might be described as an example of the common grace poured out on all humankind.  Gifts would be His specific measure of grace given to His children.

In the end, though, both natural talents and spiritual gifts are to be used to glorify God, if we are good stewards of all He has given us.  Spiritual gifts are our primary ministry contribution to His Body.  (Like one of our former pastors--his gifts are predominantly Leadership and Administration--which are clearly used for God.  His talent in playing basketball might be used of God to help reach others outside the church...or simply as a way for this pastor to stay fit and let off steam, but that talent is not equivalent to a spiritual gift.)
