Spiritual Gifts FAQs #8

Q: How much are our spiritual gifts shaped by how we expect God to show up, and vice versa? For example, could I have the gift of hospitality because I often see and experience God through fellowship and community? Or is the gift of hospitality given by God so that I can see him in community and fellowship?

A: I think it may be hard to separate that out, but I do think that when you have a gift—like hospitality—it does influence how you view God and others—and heightens your awareness of that part of God’s character/heart. So, you may see and experience God through fellowship/community because you have that gift. Perhaps, God has also given you that gift so that community/fellowship are a priority—for you, for the Body, and for those with whom you come in contact. It could be the same with other gifts as well—like Mercy—you may connect with God and people best through deeply caring relationships and may be one who finds the description of God’s heart of mercy one of the most compelling characterizations of our Lord in all of Scripture.

God distributes His gifts as He desires, for His purposes. As we live into them, we get a greater sense of His purpose and calling for ourselves…and perhaps a clearer shape of how He desires us to live and work—yours will have the flavor of hospitality…or whatever other gift/s are your top ones.
